Be Superior To Your Previous Self

true nobility being superior to your prior selfThere is nothing noble about being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self. ~Hindu Proverb

The ego and “will” reside in the same space. Are these aspects of self an asset, or a liability?

It can go either way.

One of the most popular uses of ego and willfulness is competition. What are your thoughts on competition?

Think of a professional athlete. Sports are all about competition, and professional sports brings together the finest of athletes. The goal? To be the best, take home the gold medal.

Trace back to that athlete in training. Take away the events, and who are they competing with? A successful athlete is always striving to do the best that they can, and be superior to their previous self.

Self Love Tip: Be superior to your previous self

You can strive to be the best and beat out others, or you can strive to bring out your best.

Take a moment and reflect on each of those perspectives on winning, and notice how they feel. Beating out others is often what’s thought of in regards to competition. How does beating out others feel to you? Are you able to relate, or connect with others when you’re out to beat them?

Shift over to the idea of bringing out your best, being superior to your previous self. How does that feel?  Does it feel more comfortable to be you?  Is it welcoming to others?  By striving to be superior to your previous self you might even be seen as an inspiration.

Competition is fine, when used correctly. When there is competition with others there will always be a winner, and even more there will be losers. Competition or superiority reflected on yourself is different, and everyone can end up being the winner. I’d choose to take the “Ha!” of competition with others, and turn it around, making it a long-lasting “Ah!”
